A Family-Friendly Gem
Avalanche Lake Trail is Glacier National Park's most accessible showcase of everything that makes this park extraordinary. The trail winds through an ancient forest of towering western red cedars and hemlocks, some over 500 years old, before emerging at a breathtaking glacial lake surrounded by steep mountain walls streaked with waterfalls. It's the kind of place that makes children gasp and adults remember what it felt like to be awestruck.
Beginning at the Trail of the Cedars (a fully accessible boardwalk loop through old-growth forest), the path follows Avalanche Creek through dense forest before climbing gently to the lake. The grade is moderate throughout, making this an excellent choice for families with children, older hikers, or anyone seeking a shorter but deeply rewarding Glacier experience.
What You'll See
The Trail of the Cedars section features moss-draped ancient trees, dramatic creek gorges with sculpted red rock, and a cathedral-like forest canopy. At Avalanche Lake, multiple waterfalls cascade down the steep canyon walls from Sperry Glacier above. The water is a deep emerald green, remarkably clear, and framed by a dramatic mountain amphitheater that feels almost impossibly beautiful.
