Montana's Most Iconic Trail

The Highline Trail is widely regarded as the single best day hike in Glacier National Park, and a strong contender for the best in the entire national park system. Beginning at Logan Pass along the Continental Divide, the trail traverses high alpine terrain with near-constant exposure to sweeping views of glacier-carved valleys, wildflower meadows, and rugged peaks that define this corner of Montana.

The trail clings to the Garden Wall, a narrow arĂȘte separating the east and west sides of the park, offering a thrilling, exposed traverse that will make your heart race in the best possible way. The initial section features a cable-assisted walkway carved into the cliff face, providing a dramatic start to an unforgettable journey.

What You'll See

Vibrant wildflower displays from mid-July through August, including Indian paintbrush, beargrass, and glacier lilies. Mountain goats are frequently spotted along the rocky ridgelines, and marmots are a constant, curious presence along the trail. The views span across the McDonald Valley to the west and the Many Glacier area to the east. On clear days, the panorama seems to stretch forever. The optional spur to Grinnell Glacier Overlook adds stunning views of the glacier and turquoise Grinnell Lake far below.

Trail Tips

Start early, the Logan Pass parking lot fills by 8:00 AM in peak season. Consider taking the free park shuttle. Carry bear spray and plenty of water. Weather can change rapidly at this elevation; bring layers and rain gear even on clear mornings. The trail is typically snow-free from mid-July through September. Many hikers arrange a one-way shuttle by continuing to the Loop trailhead rather than retracing their steps.
